Materialists (2025) follows Clara (Dakota Johnson), a successful art curator living in the glamorous world of New York City. Surrounded by culture, status, and luxury, Clara appears to have the perfect life. With her sharp taste and quiet confidence, she embodies the image of the modern, accomplished woman.
Things seem to align even more perfectly when she meets Edward (Chris Evans), a wealthy, charismatic investor. Edward introduces Clara to a life of comfort and prestige — lavish parties, exotic vacations, and a relationship that fits society’s definition of success. With him, Clara feels like she’s exactly where she’s supposed to be.
But everything begins to shift when Clara crosses paths with Luis (Pedro Pascal), a humble, passionate philosophy professor. Unlike Edward, Luis doesn’t offer material luxury, but he brings something Clara has been missing: depth, honesty, and a quiet emotional connection. Their conversations awaken something real in her, something that doesn’t glitter but feels true.
As Clara becomes increasingly torn, she finds herself caught between two worlds — one of security and surface-level perfection, the other of emotional authenticity and risk. The tension grows as she realizes that the life she’s built may not align with what her heart truly wants.
The story reaches its emotional peak when Clara is forced to make a decision. But instead of giving a clear answer, the film leaves space for reflection, asking the audience: In a world where love and materialism are constantly intertwined, what would you choose?
